Since the attacks in Israel in October 2023, and the escalation of the conflict that has led to unprecedented suffering in Gaza, the intensity of fighting in Israel and Lebanon has been escalating.  After a sudden increase in hostilities, many people have fled Southern Lebanon, as people try to escape the fighting.

Use this teaching resource, based on photographs taken of people migrating out of Southern Lebanon and explore how families are displaced and, often, separated by armed conflict.

Learning objectives

  1. Learn about the humanitarian consequences of armed conflicts.
  2. Apply your learning and practice empathy to understand how families might be affected during armed conflicts.
  3. Share your learning by debating a statement and showing active listening skills.

How do I use this resource?

Explore events unfolding in Lebanon through a humanitarian lens. Use the three photos to explore the impact conflicts have on families who are fleeing their country.

Download the PowerPoint to deliver the activities. Use one, some or all the activities, depending on your needs. Each one can be done in ten to fifteen minutes. Embed these activities into your lessons or use them in assembly or tutor time to engage learners with current events and humanitarian news.

Resource overview

  1. Explore the photos of people fleeing Lebanon and ask learners to analyse what they see using the “see, think, feel” framework.
  2. Debate the statement: “Family separation during conflicts should be avoided at all costs, even if it means compromising on safety.". Do learners agree or disagree? Why?
  3. Encourage learners to reflect on their values and opinions in their own time.
  4. Watch the video to allow learners to learn about what happens when families are separated due to conflict and how the Red Cross Red Crescent movement helps reunite families.
  5. If questions arise on the context of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, show learners the map in the slides and use our What is happening in Lebanon? webpage for up-to-date information.
  6. Explore what further actions people can take to learn about family reunification, or how to support the people affected through fundraising.
