BRC WWF Working with nature to protect people transcript
Our planet's health is failing, presenting a global humanitarian emergency but there is hope.
Samuel (Volunteer, Kenya Red Cross Society): Because of climate change there's been unclear weather patterns.
Especially where I come from, we are farmers and we depend on the rain.
Nowadays, we can go the whole year without rain.
Even the boreholes we use for irrigation are of little use. So you find, because of climate change there isn't enough food, animals are dying.
Faith (Volunteer, Kenya Red Cross Society): So yeah, we are really experiencing this climate change. It's a real thing here.
WWF-UK and British Red Cross have teamed up for the first time to save lives, build livelihoods, and restore nature.
Samuel: WWF came and they came with many interventions.
And taught people how to plant trees.
They gave seedlings to groups to plant and help restore the lake.
They planted trees around Lake Kenyatta, which the whole community relies on.
As for the Red Cross, during disasters when there was drought, they would bring help to those who had nothing to eat or no place to stay.
During floods they helped people who had no place to stay.
We are supporting WWF-Kenya and the Kenya Red Cross Society to restore forests, wetlands and mangroves.
Faith: Let me give an example of the mangrove restoration. So now that the fishermen have the knowledge, of the relationship between them and the mangroves, they are coming out to plant these mangroves.
In restoring these, this one is going increase the number of fish. And their sources of income are going to be more stable.
You know, sometimes to be empowered is not necessarily to be given something, but also knowledge is some sort of empowerment.
Samuel: Animals will be well fed. And even employment and self-employment will increase.
In short, people will raise their living status.
People will be able to lead healthy, happy lives.
Together we are championing nature to protect our people and our planet.
All made possible thanks to funds raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery.
