When making a journey to find safety, remember these important things to keep yourself safe:
To keep safe before travelling
- Communicate your intended route to your friends and family
- Take a picture of your passport and send it to your friends and family
- Set up a buddy system to monitor and help each other
- Be aware that not everyone can be trusted
- Be careful of offers that are too good to be true
- Remember that the emergency number while in the European Union is 112
To keep safe while travelling
- Use public transport where possible
- Use a buddy system to monitor and help each other
- Agree to a code word with your buddy, friends and family, so you can secretly alert them if you're scared
- Try to travel in a group
- If you get into a vehicle, ask permission to take a photo of the driver's license and number plate. Send this to your buddy, friends or family
- If you are feeling unsafe, seek support from the Red Cross, another aid organisation or the authorities
- Keep family and friends informed about your journey and location
- If something seems suspicious, follow your instinct and trust yourself
- If in danger, call the emergency number while in the European Union, which is 112
