Poland: humanitarian support during the Ukraine crisis

Explore how the Red Cross has been supporting Poland's response to the Ukraine crisis

Latest update: 11 March 2025

The Ukraine crisis is impacting Poland

Since the escalation of the Ukraine Crisis in 2022, millions of civilians have been affected. Over 10.6 million people have fled their homes, seeking safety in Poland and other countries.

Since 24 February 2022, more than 27 million border crossings from Ukraine to Poland have been recorded.

Poland has become a key destination for those escaping the armed conflict, offering critical support including food, shelter, medical care, mental health services, and information.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain in fully integrating displaced people and providing long-term stability.

What is happening in Poland?

Poland is hosting hundreds of thousands of displaced people fleeing the Ukraine crisis. The Polish government has helped displaced people with legal status, social security, and temporary housing.

However, many displaced people still face obstacles as they try to rebuild their lives. The housing market is strained, with an increasing number of collective shelters closing and rent prices rising.

At the same time, finding stable employment remains a challenge. Many displaced people do not yet speak Polish, which limits their job opportunities and access to services.

Despite these difficulties, Poland’s ongoing efforts to support displaced people are crucial. But the growing demand for shelter, combined with barriers to employment, continues to leave many people vulnerable and in need of further assistance.
