Support at home

Northern Ireland and Isle of Man

We provide short-term practical and emotional support at home to help people regain their independence.

Find out more about support at home.

If you are a health and social care commissioner, please look at our information for commissioners.

The service is available to people over 65 who are in hospital anywhere in Northern Ireland. Patients are referred to the service by the hospital staff or hospital social worker.

The Red Cross is working in partnership with the South West Age Partnership (SWAP) to support older, isolated people within their own communities.

This service also ties in with our Transport Support service

Mary’s story

Pensioner Mary Jenkins was facing a tough time alone at home – until our volunteer called round to help.

After a stroke landed him in hospital for ten months, Randolph wasn’t ready to face the world again – until we lent a hand.

Nobody enjoys the dentist, but Ann’s dental phobia meant she hadn’t had a check-up for 40 years – and she was in painful misery.

When disabled pensioner Maureen Gallagher needed extra support at home, the Red Cross stepped in to help.

Independent living: help people at home

From giving people confidence to doing a weekly shop, our volunteers help people to live independently in their own home.
